EMBS official launch at AUS
(Feb 25, 2009)The IEEE UAE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Chapter was officially launched in a ceremony held at the American University of Sharjah. The ceremony was attended by the chapter chair Dr. Hasan Al Nashash, Dr. Ahmed Morsy, the representative of Biomedical Engineering in Africa and the Middle East and Dr. Jorge Monzon, the EMBS Vice President for Member and Student Activities. The ceremony was also attended by students, faculty members and industry representatives. The UAE EMBS Chapter started its activities for this year with 2 presentations.
Dr. Morsy gave a very informative presentation entitled "The wonderful world of biomedical engineering". In this talk Dr. Morsy presented the field of Biomedical Engineering and some of its most important sub-disciplines. The combination of design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to help improve patient health care and the quality of life was discussed. Some challenges of researchers and practitioners in BME who need to cover in their work a wide range of applications were mentioned.
The second presentation by Dr. Monzon focused on the IEEE and EMBS. The importance and support of scientific and professional organizations was emphasized. Dr. Monzon present the largest member-based biomedical engineering society, the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society of the IEEE, its mission, types of membership, publications and benefits. He also mentioned the professional and academic activities organized annually.
