Biomedical Engineering Ethics and Professional Obligations

(Feb 26, 2009)

Dr. Monzon gave a presentation entitled "Biomedical Engineering Ethics and Professional Obligations". The rapidly growing complexity of technology in both engineering and medical biology suggests that ethical considerations are crucial to decision making and therefore to all areas of professional endeavor in Biomedical Engineering.  Dr. Monzon presented a summary of the evolution of medicine and how it affected engineering ethics. Professional issues are usually summarized in the obligations of moral conduct represented by the codes of ethics. Modern health care integrates medicine, management and engineering, each with different roles and comparable hierarchies. All of these require an understanding of fundamental moral values and the acceptance of a code of ethics. The basic requirements of a code of ethics for biomedical engineers were discussed in addition to some cases that could be used to further understanding of the ethical implications of biomedical engineering practice. Students who attended the 2 day's activities made some positive remarks on the lectures and reconfirmed their interest in Biomedical Engineering. As one student said, "It reinforced my interest in Biomedical Engineering and makes me look forward to the courses I will take in this field".

About IEEE

The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional association, with more than 375,000 members in 160 countries, and a leading authority on technology-related matters ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. The IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world's literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, has developed nearly 900 active industry standards and annually sponsors more than 850 conferences worldwide. About IEEE UAE Section

IEEE, UAE Section was established in 1987 to participate in the development of U.A.E. and fulfill the vision perceived by the nation's leaders. It has played an essential role in widening the scope of techno-electrical and computing awareness in the society. There are more than 1200 IEEE members in the section. IEEE UAE section has four society chapters; they are Power & Energy Society chapter, Computer Society chapter, Medicine and Biology Society Chapter, and Signal Processing/Communication joint chapter, in addition to two affinity groups, WIE (Women in Engineering) and GOLD (Graduate for the last decade). Moreover, it has 13 student branches in different universities across the country. More information about the section can be found at http://www.ieee-uae.com.
