More than 57 teams from various universities across the UAE participated in the 4th IEEE Student Day organised by the School of Engineering at the American University in Dubai (AUD) recently. The event, which held under the auspices of the UAE Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), rotates annually among universities in the country.
Teams competed in various workshops and competitions. AUD's electrical and computer engineering students Saeed Samadi, Osama Mohammad, Toufik Zitouni and Ebrahim Diab won the IEEE Senior Design Competition with their Library Robot RFID System that featured a fully operational autonomous robotic system that tracks books on library shelves and compares the compiled list against the library's database to generate a list of missing and misplaced books. It's the third year in a row that AUD is winning the contest.
An American University of Sharjah team came in a close second for designing a Signal Harvesting System that utilises ambient electromagnetic waves from cell phones to energise low power devices such as calculators. Third place went to students from the Petroleum Institute for their Power Systems Stability Control project.
Also taking part were teams from the Ajman University of Science and Technology, UAE University, BITS-Pilani Dubai, the Higher Colleges of Technology, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, Michigan State University-Dubai and the University of Sharjah. They participated in competitions and workshops under the supervision of more than 85 faculty members from various universities and engineering professionals.
Next year's IEEE Student Day will take place at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi.
